INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY

As every year, on February 21, 2021 is International Mother Language Day, launched by UNESCO, in order to support tolerance and linguistic plurality.

This day took on a particular importance for the Kurdish people who were the object of an attempt of cultural genocide by the occupying states, notably through the prohibition and criminalization of the Kurdish language.

Since the beginning of the revolution in Syria, the peoples of northern and eastern Syria – Kurds, Arabs, Syriacs, Armenians – have fought together and formed amidst chaos a space of equalities and freedoms of cultures, beliefs and languages. Thus, Kurdish, Arabic, Aramaic, Armenian and Turkmen are recognized and taught today in the autonomous region of North and East Syria

To mark this special day, on February 21, CDC-NES co-organized with he Education Committee for a Democratic Society (Komîteya Perwerdeya Civaka Demokratîk, KPC-Demokratîk), the public body in charge of education in the autonomous region of Rojava, a conference on the topic of the right to the mother tongue.

As external participants, we invited for this event:

  • Michael Chyet, linguist and Kurdish language specialist in the United States
  • Nil Caouissin, Breton teacher and member of the Breton Democratic Union party.
